Bethlehem TV station forced to close

Thursday, October 25, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

The only Christian television station in the Holy Land will be closing its doors as a result of constant Muslim threats and intimidation and a growing financial deficit.

"It is with great regret that we are informing you of our decision to close The Nativity - 'Al-Mahed' - television station in spite of its inestimable service to the Church and to the existence of the Christian community in the Holy Land," said the station's owner and director, Samir Qumsieh, in a press release picked up by Vatican Radio.

Qumsieh, who belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church, started The Nativity together with his brothers in 1996. In addition to Christian programming, the station also broadcast Friday Muslim prayers.
