Journalists face new restrictions in Hamas-controlled Gaza

Thursday, November 15, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Hamas on Wednesday imposed new restrictions on local and foreign journalists trying to cover events in the Gaza Strip. According to the new rules, journalists operating in Gaza without a Hamas-issued press card will be detained.

The Associated Press reported that a German television news crew member had already been arrested for violating the new guidelines, which will ensure that only the news Hamas wants to get out of Gaza will be covered.

The news comes just days after Hamas security forces opened fire on a massive Gaza City rally by supporters of the rival Fatah movement. Six people were killed and more than 100 wounded at the event, earning Hamas harsh criticism internationally.
