Report: US resigned to nuclear Iran

Sunday, November 18, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

The US is updating its foreign and military deterrence policies to take into account a nuclear-armed Iran, according to a report in London's Sunday Telegraph.

American officials cited in the report said that Iran had too successfully hidden and scattered its nuclear program for military intervention or limited international diplomatic efforts to have any realistic chance of preventing the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Reports in the British media last week indicted that Washington believes Israel may launch a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities in the very near future. Those reports followed an announcement by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that his nation now has 3,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges in operation, a significant step toward producing enough weapons-grade uranium to build bombs.

Israeli officials have expressed confidence that even if the US decides not to participate in a strike on Iran, it will support the Jewish state in doing so.
