Israeli health care in decline

A new Health Ministry report published this week painted a bleak picture of Israel's socialist health care system, reported Israel's Ynet news portal.

The report rated Israel very low in comparison to other industrialized nations like the US, Canada, Japan, Australia and the European nations.

The main problems pointed out in the document were a dearth of hospital beds - only 2.1 beds per 1,000 people at present - and a decreasing number of nurses and doctors per capita.

Earlier in the year, a similar report noted that a growing number of young Israelis are opting to enter the more lucrative high tech fields rather than study medicine.

These deficiencies have led to a relatively high infant mortality rate - 9 newborn deaths for every 2,000 births - and a relatively low life expectancy.
