Israel angered by Egypt's breaking of Gaza seal

Thursday, December 06, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Israel filed an official complaint with Cairo on Wednesday after Egypt unilaterally opened its border with the Gaza Strip to allow local Palestinians to participate in the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

Israel said the unsupervised manner in which the border was opened almost certainly resulted in at least dozens of Hamas terrorists exiting Gaza in order to receive additional training in Iran.

"This is a clear breach of agreements we have made with the Egyptians," an Israeli diplomatic source told The Jerusalem Post.

Iran has been the primary supplier of arms and military training to the Hamas authorities controlling Gaza.

Israel has a long-standing dispute with Egypt over the latter's failure to curb the smuggling of terrorist weapons into Gaza, despite sharing a border that is a mere 8 miles long with the territory.
