Soldier killed, four wounded in roadside shootings

Sunday, January 09, 2005 |
Sgt. Yosef Attiah, 21, of Petah Tikva, was killed Friday and three other soldiers and a civilian wounded in two shootings on Road 505 (Across Samaria-Road), as Palestinian terrorists waiting in ambush on the roadside opened fire at the vehicle as it passed the village of Usarin, near Tapuah Junction. More than 30 bullets had hit the car, security officials told the Jerusalem Post. Attiah and his three friends were in civilian clothing to spend Shabbat at the pre-military training academy in Ma’ale Ephraim they had attended before joining the army. PA chairmanship candidate Abbas critized the attacks but did not condemn them, saying, “There is no justification for this operation but there are a lot of reasons behind it.”
