Senior Palestinian Authority officials expressed fears of a low voter turnout as a result of indifference among many Palestinians and a call by Hamas and other groups to boycott the election. Eve of election opinion polls showed Fatah candidate Mahmoud Abbas slated to win between 51 and 69 percent of the vote. The PA complained that Israel had broken its promise to ease restrictions by taking down the IDF checkpoints to alow a free vote. Israeli officials said that restrictions were being eased as promised, and said PA officials were attacking Israel as an alibi for low turnout.
