Gaza mortars pound Israeli village

Monday, January 14, 2008 |  by Staff Writer

Palestinian forces operating out of the northern Gaza Strip fired eight mortar shells at a small nearby Israeli community on Sunday, causing extensive damage to a number of homes. Miraculously, there were no injuries in the barrage.

Later in the day, Israel responded to the ongoing Palestinian rocket and mortar fire by attacking a terrorist cell traveling through Gaza City. Three of the cell members were killed when a missile fired by Israeli aircraft destroyed their vehicle.

The strike took place just yards from the residence of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, prompting initial speculation that Israel had attacked the terror boss whose party the Palestinians overwhelmingly voted into power two years ago.
