Final election results in for PLO Chairmanship

Monday, January 10, 2005 |

Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), the Palestine Liberation Organization chief, has won over 60% of Sunday’s vote for Palestinian Authority Chairman, according to Palestinian election officials. Mustafa Barghouti, an independent candidate, won about 21%, with the five remaining candidates scoring in the low single digits. Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said that the war on terror should begin the day after the elections. Sources in the Prime Minster’s office have stated that only once Abbas will show his seriousness in fighting terrorism will it be possible to know how to proceed with the Disengagement Plan and how that will be coordinated with the Palestinian Authority.
