The new government convened for its first time Tuesday morning. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's new government was narrowly approved by the Knesset on Monday despite no-confidence votes from 13 members of his Likud Party. The so-called "disengagement government" which is comprised of Likud, Labor and United Torah Judaism, was approved by a vote of 58-56, with six abstentions. Leaning on support from the far Left, Sharon established a new coalition that will allow him to carry out the Disengagement Plan to evacuate settlers and the army from the Gaza Strip and the northern West Bank by the end of this year.
