Deputy Secretary General and co-founder of Lebanon's Hizballah terrorist militia, Imad Mughniyah was killed late Tuesday evening after a bomb destroyed the vehicle in which he was riding in Damascus.
Hizballah and its regional allies immediately blamed Israel for the assassination.
Mughniyah had for years topped both Israel's and the American FBI's most-wanted terrorists lists.
Known to have been behind numerous bombings, hijackings and abductions - including the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires and the 1985 hijacking of a TWA passenger jet - Mughniyah was considered by many to have been an even more important target than overall Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
According to foreign reports, Israel tried to kill Mughniyah on several occasions in the past.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev refused to comment on the bombing.
