Fearing lynch, Israeli kills Palestinian stone-thrower

An armed Israeli civilian on Monday shot and killed a young Palestinian stone-thrower as he and some 30 other Arab assailants surrounded and attacked the Jewish man during his morning walk near his home in Samaria (the so-called West Bank).

The man later told army investigators that he feared being lynched by the rioting Arabs, and so opened fire into the air in an effort to scare them away. When the Arabs continued to hurl stones and move close to the Israeli, he pointed his gun at one and them and fired.

Army officials said they have concluded the Israeli man acted appropriately considering the situation.

However, a left-wing Israeli lawmaker who chose to ignore the defensive nature of the shooting demanded legal action be taken against the man, who is a resident of one of the Israeli "settlements" the leftist establishment wants uprooted.

Police officials said they still intend to carry out a full investigation into the shooting, and have yet to determine whether or not they will arrest Jewish man involved.

In other area violence, two Israeli army officers were wounded on Monday in separate Palestinian riots in the Samarian towns of Nablus and Kalkilya.

Earlier near Nablus, Israeli Border Police forces shot and wounded a Palestinian man who was about to hurl a firebomb at them. The Nablus area was also the scene of numerous overnight firebomb and rock attacks against Israeli military patrols and civilian Jewish motorists.

Further south near Bethlehem, a Palestinian stone-thrower wounded an Israeli motorist on Monday morning. Nearby Israeli soldiers shot and wounded the assailant.

On the eastern side of Jerusalem, an Israeli man was lightly wounded after being struck in the head by a stone hurled by a Arab youth participating in a violent demonstration.

Palestinians across Judea and Samaria, as well as Arab residents of Jerusalem, erupted in an orgy of violence against Israeli soldiers and Jewish civilians in response to news of Israel's weekend military incursion into the Gaza Strip.
