An Israeli soldier was killed and two others were wounded on Wednesday when their squad of elite commandoes was ambushed by Palestinian forces while conducting a search for terrorist infrastructure in central Gaza.

The army said the soldiers came under heavy machine gun and anti-tank missile fire in a well-coordinated ambush by Hamas forces. Palestinian sources said that at least one Hamas gunman was killed and four others wounded when the Israelis returned fire.

In related news, Palestinian forces operating out of northern Gaza fired at least four mortar shells at communities in southern Israel on Wednesday. The shells all landed in open areas causing no injuries or damage.
