Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suspended all contact with the Palestinian Authority, including meeting with the new PA chairman, Mahmoud Abbas, demanding that the PA make a real effort to stop terror in the wake of the Karni Crossing attack. The investigation into the attack at Karni found that when the terrorists arrived at the crossing by truck with the bomb hidden under merchandise, they were not disturbed at this stage by any of the Palestinian security men. Israel charged that the PA officials had in effect assisted in the attack by allowing the gunmen to reach the site unimpeded.
