Sunday, January 16, 2005 |
The Israel Defense Forces is in its second day of an operation intended to deter the shelling of Israeli targets. The operation follows a rocket attack on Sderot on Saturday, which left a 17-year-old girl in critical condition. According to IDF sources, the goal of the operation is to make it more difficult for rockets to be fired on the Gush Katif settlement bloc in Gaza. On Sunday, Palestinian militants continued to fire Qassams at a number of Israeli targets. "The IDF and the security forces have been directed to boost operational activities aimed at halting terrorism and they will continue doing so on an unrestricted basis so long as the Palestinians refrain from lifting a finger. The operational level has been instructed to carry out any and all actions to halt the terror," Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said.
