British paper: Hizballah training new army for war with Israel

Lebanon's Hizballah terrorist militia is currently training thousands of new soldiers in Lebanon, Syria and Iran in anticipation of a soon coming war with Israel, the British newspaper The Observer reported on Sunday.

Following on the ground investigations and numerous interviews with Hizballah, Lebanese and UN officials in Lebanon, the newspaper discovered that Hizballah, encouraged by its relative successes against Israeli forces in the 2006 Second Lebanon War, is building a new army in direct violation of the UN resolution that ended that conflict.

Many of the new troops are being trained in Lebanon, but those requiring specialty training in the use of RPGs and anti-tank missiles are being sent to Iran.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which put an end to the Second Lebanon War, charged the Lebanese army and a bolstered UN peacekeeping force stationed in southern Lebanon with preventing Hizballah from regrouping as a fighting force and reestablishing itself in the area.

But senior Israeli defense sources cited by Ha'aretz said recently that the UN force in intentionally concealing information regarding Hizballah activities in southern Lebanon in order to avoid being targeted by the terror group. According to the sources, over the past six months there have been at least four cases in which the UN peacekeepers discovered Hizballah transporting weapons into southern Lebanon, but refused to halt the illicit activity or to fully report on it to their superiors in New York.

Israeli military officials have repeatedly warned that Hizballah is more ready for a full-scale war with Israel today than it was before the Second Lebanon War, highlighting the dismal failure of the agreements that brought that confrontation to a close before the terrorists could be defeated.
