Army prepares for major Gaza operation

Monday, January 17, 2005 |
Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Moshe Ya'alon has instructed the Southern Command to prepare for a ground operation in the entire Gaza Strip. The purpose of the ground operation is to combat Qassam and mortar shell attacks coming from that region. The operation will be implemented only if the new Palestinian Authority Chairman, Mahmoud Abbas, fails to take action against the terrorists working out of Gaza, Army Radio reported. According an IDF officer, the army may be forced to establish a security belt along the border with the Gaza Strip in order to distance the attacks from Israel.
