Violators will be punished

Monday, January 17, 2005 |
After the PA’s emergency meeting on Monday, Qurei told reporters that anyone who violates the orders to prevent attacks on Israel would be punished. He said the PA leadership was serious in its efforts to put an end to the violence. Abbas, he added, issued "firm" instructions to the security forces to assume their responsibilities. He said the new measures would be implemented gradually with the hope of reaching a cease-fire with Israel. "We are determined to break the cycle of violence and prevent all attacks," he added. "No one is above the law." However, a spokesman for the Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Nablus rejected the offer to join the security forces, saying his men would continue to fight against Israel "until the end of the occupation." The radical Islamic movement Hamas was swift to announce it would continue with its attacks against Israeli targets, Israel Radio reported.
