Abbas heads to Gaza to halt to terror attacks

Tuesday, January 18, 2005 |
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was due to travel to Gaza on Tuesday to meet with the leaders of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other terror organizations with the intention of reaching an agreement to a cessation of terrorist activity. Abbas has stated his position on numerous occasions that he will not seek to disarm the terror organizations, but will continue dialogue in an effort to stop the firing of rockets and mortar shells at Israeli targets. "Israel expects him to take matters into his hands," said a senior Israeli source. "Meanwhile, all we've heard are words." The Israel Defense Forces sources admitted that Chairman Abbas must be given more time to fulfill his promises to deal with the terror, but as of Monday night the IDF has not seen any activity on the part of the PA security forces indicating that they are making any moves.
