The Israeli cabinet decided to redistribute gas masks to the public beginning in 2009. In 2006, the Defense Ministry began collecting the masks from the public’s homes.
The Defense Ministry decided that it will establish distribution centers such as shopping malls where people can come and pick up their gas masks.
The Defense Ministry said that the decision to redistribute gas masks was not a direct result of intelligence information or connected to Syria and Iran, but rather as a result of the Winograd Report.
The initiative of formulating a plan was carried out by the Israeli Army's Homefront Command and Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna’i who worked together on calculating the necessary budget for the masks.
