Despite ongoing negotiations with Israel to exchange the Golan Heights for a peace agreement, Syria is continuing to transfer weapons to Hizballah, the Lebanon-based terrorist group in southern Lebanon, according to military intelligence.
“The weapons are arriving in Lebanon, and then they make their way to the south of the country,” Brigadier General Yossi Baidatz said in an intelligence briefing at the Knesset.
Baidatz also said that Syria was not actually going to distance itself from Iran, whose leader has vowed to annihilate Israel, despite recent diplomatic contact. Meanwhile, Hizballah is enhancing its rocket capability on Israel’s northern border.
“The rockets are coming in from Syria and Iran,” Baidatz said.
Meanwhile, today Damascus signalled it is in fact stregthening ties with Iran, backing up Baidatz's assessment. Syrian Defense Minister Hassan Turkmani said that his country was prepared to increase its military cooperation with Iran.
"Iran and Syria share the same viewpoint regarding regional issues and efforts will be made to strengthen our shared interests and bilateral relations," Turkmani said.
