Knesset Member: Death penalty for giving up Israeli land

Member of Knesset Arieh Eldad said on Monday at the Golan Lobby meeting that anyone who gives away Israeli land deserves the death penalty because it would be an act of treason against the Jewish state.

The statement came after renewed negotiations between Israel and Syria and speculations of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert giving back the Golan Heights.

“He who purposefully causes any territory to cease being under Israel's sovereignty or to be under the sovereignty of a foreign country, or any act that results in this, must be sentenced to death or life imprisonment,” Eldad said.

The Golan Heights was captured from Syria in 1967 and has been an integral part of Israel ever since. Other Knesset members filed complaints against Eldad, saying his statements could be considered incitement against the prime minister.
