Barak orders demolition of Jerusalem terrorists' homes

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Friday ordered the army to officially file injunctions calling for the demolition of the eastern Jerusalem homes of two Arab terrorists who killed 11 Israelis in two separate attacks in recent months, Army Radio reported.

The order came after Israeli Attorney-General Menachem Mazuz ruled on Thursday that it is legally permissible for Israel to demolish the family homes of the two terrorists.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called on Mazuz to issue an official legal recommendation on the matter after an Arab resident of the eastern Jerusalem village of Sur Baher plowed a massive earth-moving bulldozer into traffic on a busy downtown street on Wednesday, killing three Israelis and wounding dozens more.

In March, an Arab resident of another nearby Jerusalem village went on a bloody shooting spree in one of the capital's main yeshivas, killing eight young Jewish Bible students. After that attack, Olmert and his government rejected calls for the terrorist's home to be demolished, fearing the international backlash.

But with many Israelis increasingly concerned that Jerusalem's large Arab population could be hiding many more potential terrorists, the government now concurs that deterrence must be established.

In other violence, a Palestinian Arab truck driver tried to run over an Israeli soldier at a checkpoint near the Samarian town of Ramallah on Friday.

The soldier managed to jump out of the way in time, and other soldiers opened fire on and hit the truck, which still managed to escape into a nearby Palestinian village. Soldiers entered the village and were searching for the bullet-riddled truck and its driver.
