Israel set to legalize auto racing

Monday, July 07, 2008 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel is expected by the end of this summer to finally issue regulations that will make auto racing a legal and officially recognized sport in the Jewish state, reported The Jerusalem Post.

Israel's Knesset passed a law in December 2005 legalizing auto racing in the country, but the sport remained underground as official regulations were never established and police continued to view racing as an illegal activity.

Israelis have been racing for over 20 years, and many have even entered prestigious European competitions. But until now racing has not been a spectator sport in Israel, as the racers always feared that inviting fans would also bring the police.

Government officials involved with efforts to now fully legalize the sport expect auto racing to quickly become very popular in Israel.
