Palestinian Authority: Maybe we should kidnap Israelis, too

Sunday, July 13, 2008 |  Israel Today Staff

A minister in the US-backed government of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas suggested at the weekend that the Palestinian Authority should start following the example of Hamas and Hizballah by kidnapping Israeli soldiers as leverage to win the release of jailed Palestinian terrorists.

"On the Palestinian street there is now an understanding that without kidnapping soldiers, we can't get prisoners released," said Palestinian Authority Minister for Prisoner Affairs Ashraf al-Ajami at a gathering of Palestinian Arabs and extreme left-wing Israeli activists near Jerusalem.

According to Israel National News, Al-Ajami claimed that negotiations with Israel had failed to free any Palestinian security prisoners from Israeli jails.

In fact, many thousands of jailed Palestinian prisoners have been freed by Israel over the past decade as goodwill gestures and as a direct result of negotiations. Al-Ajami himself was once jailed by Israel for his participation in terrorist activity against Israeli Jews.
