The European Union on Monday called Israel's decision to build more homes in Jewish-dominated neighborhoods on the eastern side of Jerusalem illegal and a detriment to peace efforts.
Referring to the construction of Jewish homes in the half of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinian Arabs as "settlement activity," the EU statement accused Israel of trying to prejudice the outcome of peace negotiations.
Aware that the Palestinian Authority will not agree to any final status peace deal that does not include Israel surrendering half of its capital, the Europeans said that Israel is knowingly compromising the viability of the two-state solution.
The statement was released in response to last month's government approval for the construction of 900 new apartment units in the neighborhoods of Har Homa, Pisgat Ze'ev and Gilo.
