Gaza 'peace boat' activist arrested by Israel

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 |  Israel Today Staff

Israeli Professor Jeff Halper made the critical error of trying to enter the Jewish state after helping to organize and participating in a breach of Israel's naval blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Halper and a group of international left-wing activists reached the Gaza shores in two small sail boats on Saturday after the Israeli navy decided against confronting them. Their goal was to cast an international spotlight on what they call Israel's "siege" of Gaza, though Israel's refusal to try to stop them resulted in very little media coverage.

Halper, however, made the mistake of entering Israel via Gaza's Erez Crossing, at which point he was arrested for violating a regulation that currently forbids Israelis to enter the volatile coastal strip.

Police officials will question Halper over the next couple days, at which point a decision will be made whether or not to officially incarcerate him.
