A new television ad by the presidential campaign of Republican John McCain takes Democratic rival Barack Obama to task for previously brushing aside the threat Iranian nuclear weapons would pose to Israel.
The ad reminds viewers that during his primary election campaign against Senator Hillary Clinton, Obama stated that Iran is a "tiny" country that "doesn't pose a serious threat" to America.
The McCain campaign uses the ad to fire back that Iran's desire to see Israel obliterated and its feverish efforts to acquire the weapons necessary to do it poses a very real threat to the United States.
US politicians and experts have over the past decades repeatedly confirmed that despite its small size and lack of natural resources, Israel's continued existence and economic and military strength is the greatest asset to American interests in the region.
Israel's destruction would likely lead to a proliferation throughout the Middle East of the kind of anti-America radical Islamic rule that today holds sway in Iran.
