Lebanese army chopper shot down over Hizballah territory

Thursday, August 28, 2008 |  Israel Today Staff

A Lebanese army helicopter was shot down and the pilot killed during a training exercise that took the aircraft over territory controlled by the Hizballah terrorist militia in southern Lebanon.

The army refrained from blaming Hizballah directly in its official statement, instead saying that the helicopter had come under fire from "armed elements."

Reuters reports that Hizballah gunmen and Lebanese soldiers prevented journalists from reaching the crash site.

The incident debunked assertions by Beirut and United Nations peacekeepers on the ground that Hizballah is no longer operating in southern Lebanon.
