Israeli found dead in Sinai, violence suspected

Wednesday, September 10, 2008 |  Israel Today Staff

A 70-year-old Israeli woman was found dead in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula early Wednesday morning. Israeli Foreign Ministry officials who had viewed the body reported signs of violence. Earlier this summer, the Israeli government issued an urgent warning for Israelis to avoid traveling to the Sinai during the second half of this year. The warning was based on intelligence that Hizballah and Hamas were operating in the Sinai in order to abduct and kill Israeli tourists. Thousands of Israelis visit the Egyptian Sinai every year for its quiet beaches, clear waters and exciting hiking opportunities. The flow of Israeli tourists is always greatest around the Fall holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Succot.
