Palestinian forces widen control of Gaza

Some 2,000 paramilitary Palestinian police took up positions in the southern Gaza Strip, to prevent rocket and mortar attacks on nearby Jewish settlements. Many of the armed and uniformed men fanned out in the Rafah area, one of the hottest flashpoints of fighting between Israeli troops and Palestinian terrorists. The deployment is part of an emerging cease-fire. Palestinian police moved in to northern Gaza a week ago, and since then violence has dropped off sharply.
