Israelis taken hostage on Caribbean island

Thursday, October 16, 2008 |  Israel Today Staff

Twelve Israelis working for an Israeli construction firm on a project in the Turks and Caicos Island chain in the Caribbean were taken hostage by 300 Chinese laborers on Thursday.

The Chinese workers seized the Israelis and issued ransom demands after being informed that the project was being halted because the US banks that had invested in it had collapsed and that they--the Chinese workers--were to be deported.

The kidnappers said they are demanding enough money to cover the cost of their trip from China to the island of West Caicos, as well as equivalent wages.

West Caicos is an isolated island with no police presence.
