Islamists win council elections in Gaza

Friday, January 28, 2005 |
The Islamic terrorist group Hamas won 65 percent of the vote in elections for 10 local councils in the Gaza Strip. The results were a blow to the new Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, whose ruling Fatah faction took just 30 percent of the vote. Abbas is pushing for an end to more than four years of violence and terror, but results indicate strong Palestinian support for Hamas, which has carried out dozens of suicide bombings and seeks the destruction of Israel.
