In a worrying sign of how much anti-Semitism is creeping back into mainstream American culture, students at a suburban St. Louis middle school last week held what they called "Hit a Jew Day."
At least 10 of the school's 35 Jewish students were publicly struck by classmates.
The racially motivated incident was a perversion of an unofficial "Hug a Friend Day" held earlier in the month.
The students involved in the incident are expected to be suspended and forced to attend counseling.
The Associated Press reported that Jewish leaders are concerned that the incident is indicative of a rebirth of mainstream anti-Semitism in the United States.
