Mass demonstration by the settlers

Monday, January 31, 2005 |
In a show of strength, more than 100,000 Israeli settlers and their supporters held a mass protest outside the Knesset (parliament) here in Jerusalem. They were protesting the government's plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip this summer and dismantle 21 settlements there. It was one of the biggest demonstrations ever in Jerusalem and shows that the settlers are still able to get huge crowds onto the streets, even though the Gaza pullout appears inevitable. "Ariel Sharon, you have no mandate to expel Jews," said Effie Eitam, a hawkish former Cabinet minister who Sharon fired because of his opposition to the Gaza pullout. The demonstrators held signs that read: "Expel Jews--never again!" and "The people have decided Sharon is bad for the Jews."
