Lebanon announced late last week that it will soon officially recognize "Palestine" as an independent and sovereign state.

Lebanese Information Minister Tariq Mitri said following a cabinet meeting on Thursday that the government had "approved the establishment of diplomatic relations with the state of Palestine."

In practical terms, the decision means that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) mission in Beirut will be upgraded to an official embassy.
