Israeli Arab gov't minister tells beauty queen to stay at home

Israeli Minister of Culture, Science and Sport Raleb Majadele, Israel's first Arab government minister, crowned the winner of the fifth annual Arab beauty pageant in his official capacity on Sunday night, and then proceeded to lecture the girl on stage.

Majadele told the 19-year-old Druze winner and the rest of the audience that the place of a woman in Arab society is at home, and not out building a career.

"I would like to see the woman fill a central role in the building of a family according to the Arab society's world view, and not that of the blind Israeli modern European society," he said. "The woman's role should be to build a good family, to be an aide to her husband and to stand by him."

Those gathered at the event were unmoved by Majadele's remarks, though much of the Israeli media criticized the fact that a man so out of touch with 21st century society is representing Israeli culture.
