Israel enacts harsh new junk email law

Sunday, December 07, 2008 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel last week enacted a harsh new spam, or junk mail, law that brings together all of the most strict regulations from spam laws in Europe and the US.

The Israeli law makes it illegal for anyone to send out an email - either to bulk recipients or individually - that in any way encourages the spending or giving of money without prior explicit permission from the recipients and a clear option to opt out of receiving future communications.

Unlike similar laws in Europe and the US, the wording used in the Israeli law appears to make even unrequested charitable solicitations illegal.

Furthermore, the Israeli law requires no proof of damage in order to successfully sue the spammer.
