German president to promote reconciliation

Tuesday, February 01, 2005 |

German President Horst Kohler has arrived for a two day visit to Israel, in the shadows of the Holocaust. Today, he’ll visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial here in Jerusalem and tomorrow, he’ll address the Knesset, Israel's parliament, seeking forgiveness for the murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis during World War II. Israel welcomes the visit, but some people have reservation. “It's too early to have a speech in the German language in the Knesset, as long as we have survivors of the Holocaust...still living," Knesset member Hemi Doron told Israel Radio. “It's not appropriate.” Others see the visit--and the speech--as an important expression of reconciliation.
