Some Gaza settlers call it quits

Wednesday, February 02, 2005 |
With an Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip appearing inevitable, 38 settler families have signed an agreement to leave their homes voluntarily. The families, from two settlements in northern Gaza, will move to a community inside Israel. "We need to be ready for the day after, so we are acting in a responsible, thoughtful way," Elei Sinai resident David Sa’adon, one of the people who signed the agreement, told Israel Radio. "If there is an evacuation, approved by law, then those who think we are acting prematurely will at that point have to start doing what we’re doing." While 38 families is only a small portion of the 8,500 settlers in Gaza, it's a blow to the ideological settlement movement, which has vowed to fight the pullout to the bitter end.
