Editorials in Israel's major newspapers at the weekend congratulated Barack Obama on his becoming the 44th president of the United States, and the first African American to fill that office, but said now it's time to deliver on his promises.
Several of the editorials noted that Americans had heaped such praise on Obama, but had thus far failed to demand to see the goods he guaranteed.
For Israel, fulfillment of certain campaign promises is existential. Iran, for instance, is a topic on which Israel hopes Obama can very quickly score a major achievement, though the editorials did not sound optimistic about the president's intended policy of diplomatic engagement.
Some of the editorials expressed concern that Obama's early efforts at rapprochement with the Muslim and Arab worlds could encourage an increase in terrorism.
