A top representative of one of Israel's Arab Knesset parties on Wednesday urged all Israeli Arabs to participate in the upcoming election so his and other Arab factions can be an effective fifth column within the Israeli government.
"What are our weapons when Israel is already an existing fact?" Awad al-Fatah, secretary-general of the Balad Party, asked in remarks carried by Ynet. "The elections are part of the means available the us; we seek to fight Zionism within its own home."
Al-Fatah was speaking at a conference called in the northern Israel Arab town of Sakhnin to discuss calls from within the Arab sector to boycott the upcoming national election.
Al-Fatah and others warned that doing so would only strengthen those parties that insist on defining Israel as "the Jewish state."
Balad and one of its sister Arab parties, Ta'al, were banned from participating in the February 10 election by Israel's Central Election Committee last month, but Israel's Supreme Court quickly overturned the decision.
The committee determined that Balad and Ta'al actively oppose the existence of the Jewish state, and are therefore unfit to serve in its parliament.
