Israel recalls ambassador to Switzerland

Monday, April 20, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel on Monday recalled its ambassador to Switzerland for consultations after Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz publicly and warmly welcomed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a UN anti-racism conference in Geneva a day earlier.

Israel urged Merz to avoid shaking Ahmadinejad's hand, noting that the Iranian leader had publicly called for the Jewish state's destruction on more than one occassion.

But Merz defended his welcoming of Ahmadinejad, insisting that Switzerland always has been and always will be neutral in all conflicts.
