Israel takes emergency measures for swine flu

Thursday, April 30, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel's Health Ministry on Thursday raised its pandemic alert level to Phase 5 out of six after several Israelis returning from vacations abroad were found to have possibly contracted the so-called "swine flu."

The most noticeable measure to be taken is the checking by a doctor of all airlines passengers arriving from Mexico before they are allowed to enter Israel.

Israelis who have traveled to any other countries where swine flu has been found are being urged to avoid crowded areas and public transportation and to immediately get checked by a doctor.

Swine flu is believed to have killed nearly 200 people in Mexico over the past week, and has spread to much of North America and Western Europe. At least a dozen Israelis are currently hospitalized on suspicion of having contracted the disease.
