Israeli Arab MK tries to redivide Jerusalem

Monday, May 18, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

Israeli Arab Member of Knesset Ahmed Tibi on Monday submitted a bill proposing the cancellation of the Basic Law: Jerusalem, which legally formalized the reunification of the city under Israeli sovereignty following the 1967 Six Day War.

Tibi insisted that the eastern half of Jerusalem must revert to Arab Muslim control under the Palestinian Authority, including all Christian and Jewish holy sites.

While the bill is expected to have no chance of passing, if it did, Jerusalem would immediately be recognized as a divided city under "occupation."

Meanwhile, a poll by the Shin1 social networking group revealed that an overwhelming 83 percent of Israelis between the ages of 12 and 18 are opposed to ever dividing Jerusalem, even in the framework of a peace agreement.

A mere 6 percent of Israeli youth supported the division of Jerusalem into Israeli and Palestinian capitals.
