Hizballah tried to attack Israeli embassy

Thursday, July 09, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

A court in Azerbaijan on Wednesday opened proceedings against a Hizballah-led terrorist cell that earlier in the year plotted to bomb the Israeli Embassy in the capital city of Baku.

The two Lebanese and four Azerbaijani defendants were also accused of ties to Al Qaeda and Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

According to the charges, the cell was just weeks away from attacking the Israeli Embassy in Baku with a bomb-laden car when it was busted.

Cell members said the attack was planned to avenge the February 2008 assassination of Hizballah operational leader Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus. Israel has denied playing any role in Mughniyeh's death.
