Islamic terror groups agree to uphold truce

Sunday, February 13, 2005 |

Hamas and the Islamic Jihad have agree to unofficially abide by the truce, after talks with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in the Gaza Strip. The groups shelled Jewish settlements in Gaza last week, prompting a warning from Abbas that further cease-fire violations would not be tolerated. Israel had told Abbas that peace efforts would collapse if he fails to rein in the terrorists. The groups said they’d maintain calm but would not formally sign on to the truce until they conclude that the Israeli army is no longer tracking down militants. The groups have also demanded the release of all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails as a condition for a cease-fire.
