UN troops helped Lebanese infiltrate Israel

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel this week issued a letter of complaint to the United Nations claiming that its soldiers under the command of UNIFIL in southern Lebanon actually aided a group of Lebanese civilians in infiltrating northern Israel at the weekend.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gabriela Shalev said that UNIFIL troops stationed in the area were perfectly aware that the group of some 12-15 Lebanese were moving into northern Israel and did nothing to stop them. She said that according to some witnesses, the infiltrators actually coordinated their movements with UNIFIL personnel on the ground.

Shalev said the incident highlighted a worrying pattern of behavior, both on the part of the Lebanese and the UN forces mandated to prevent another conflict between Israel and its northern neighbor.
