Palestinian PM takes up residence in Jerusalem

Tuesday, August 11, 2009 |  Israel Today Staff

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad is now living full time at his home in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina, reports Ha'aretz.

Fayyad's wife is a Jerusalem resident, and the couple has owned the Beit Hanina property for about 10 years - long before Fayyad was tapped to take over the reigns of Palestinian government.

But locals told the newspaper that Fayyad never really lived in the Jerusalem house, and only took up full time residence there over the past year, since become prime minister of the PA.

Fayyad, along with his boss, Palestinian 'President' Mahmoud Abbas, have maintained Yasser Arafat's central message that Jerusalem belongs to the Muslims, and more specifically, to the Palestinian Arabs. Fayyad and Abbas insist they will never sign a final status peace deal with Israel unless it includes the full surrender of the eastern half of Jerusalem to the PA.
