Ex-Lebanese PM assassinated in Beirut

Monday, February 14, 2005 |
As Israel and the Palestinians were talking peace, Lebanon was suddenly taken back to the bad old days of the1975-90 civil war. A massive explosion rocked the posh seafront in Beirut, targeting former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri as he passed in a motorcade. Hariri and at least nine other people were killed, including several of his bodyguards. More than 20 cars were set on fire and the facade of the famous St. George Hotel was devastated. It appears that Syria or pro-Syrian factions were behind the blast. Hariri had recently called on Syria to pull its troops out of Lebanon. These kind of attacks have been rare since the civil war ended.
